The Scouting Way

by

Gordon Gledhill and Keith Brew

This poem was written back in 1987 when Keith and myself were Venture Scouts with 1st Douglas Scout Group. Although some of the verses are now alittle dated, most are still relevant for todays way of Scouting

Once there were some baggy shorts,
With nobody in them and no supports.
Baden Powell came along and had an idea,
Lets put them on and find more gear

Soon it came to the Isle of Man
In 1909 Ist Douglas began.
The kids did come from far and wide,
To see what fun there was supplied.
Camping, knotting and other skills,
Were taught to Scouts amongst the hills.

B.P. is great the lads did shout,
For you we are prepared to Scout.
In 1914 to war they did go,
To help the Army, Airforce and Navy so.
And to return to teach more Scouting skills,
To lads that never left the hills.

When the wars had been and gone,
The Scouts were all still going strong.
New generations of families came,
To carry on the Scouting game.

Now we bring it up to date,
Where Scouting in Mann is still first rate.
The many Groups have kept together,
Through many kinds of horrid weather.
The Leaders and the Helpers do,
The word of Scouting through and through.

The Scouting word has gone throughout,
The World where now they all do shout.
The camp at Peel in '85,
When Scouts in Mann did come alive.
It rained and rained and rained some more,
But we all coped without a flaw.

The Italians, Swedes and Frenchies too,
Were fully prepared but all wet through.
The Germans pitched their tents on stilts,
While all the rest were up to the hilts,
With water surrounding one and all,
We can safely say we had a ball.

After all is said and done,
The Scouting World is still the one,
With skills to help the kids get by,
In future life were they will try,
To teach their kids the Scouting way,
To take them through the world today.
